Ammonia is a gas compound made up of 1 nitrogen and 3 hydrogen molecules, it has a very strong smell and is colourless. The human body produces ammonia every day, it also leaves and enters the your body everyday, it is essential for maintaining the acid-base balance in your body and so keeps you healthy.
Gaseous Ammonia
When ammonia is in gas state their lifetime only lasts for a few hours and deposits near its source. Ammonia is very soluble in water so when in contact it dissolves into water vapor and is deposited back to the earths surface through rainfall.
Particulate Ammonia
When gaseous ammonia combines with an acidic gas (e.g. sulfuric acid) in the atmosphere it forms into a solid called ammonium salt. Because of their small size and increased lifespan of approximately 15 days, the ammonium salt are able to travel further than the gaseous ammonia before being dry and wet deposited the surface.
